Time to Celebrate the Heroic Women of 2013

January 4, 2014 By Susan Gunelius

A new year is here, so let’s celebrate some of the brave and heroic women who made an impact on the world during the previous 12 months.

That was Microsoft’s mission (as part of its “Honestly” marketing campaign) when its global advertising team put together a video to Sara Bareilles’s popular 2013 song, Brave. The result is a highly shareable video that is packed with emotion.

Kathleen Hall, general manager of global advertising for Microsoft explains:

“In reflecting upon the year, and with “Brave’s” message of empowerment, we were inspired to do something different. We want to draw attention to the bravery and courage of some women from the past year across diverse fields and perspectives. We believe that spotlighting a group of courageous women this year who spoke out, broke barriers, overcame tragedy and changed the world shows what the human spirit can achieve when set free – and can encourage more people to “say what you want to say.” They inspire all of us to find the best in ourselves and find our own form of bravery. Their examples empower us all.”

Nine women are mentioned in the video:

  • Malala Yousafzai
  • Margaret Thatcher
  • Gabrielle Giffords
  • Diana Nyad
  • Janet Yellen
  • Antoinette Tuff
  • Angela Merkel
  • Edith Windsor
  • Deborah Cohan

What a wonderful video! I so agree with the choices of women. That’s always so hard, because there are hundreds of women, shyer ladies perhaps, who are achieving the impossible. They stand on the shoulders of so many great women of history, and all their stories need telling. Thanks for an excellent compilation.
