Are You in Business or Do You Just Own a Job?

Leverage is one massive key to successful business. And leveraging the skills and experiences of people who work with and for you is absolutely essential if you want to reach the dizzying heights of business success.

It is also a skill that a lot of business owners lack.

You may have started your business as the general dogsbody—learning how to do every little thing in your business. That is the norm at the beginning. However, if you keep doing this, it will get to the point where you become the cork in a business that is ready to explode. And if you wait too long to let it explode, all the energy fizzles out and you are left with nothing but a business that cycles up then drops right down as you make choices that hold it in place.

How do you know when it is time to let go of the reins of your business?

You don’t!

The clients I deal with always get caught in the catch 22 cycle of ‘ Do I have enough money to employ?’ against ‘Can I afford not to employ?’

It is a tough cycle to break free of. And yet, you must. Get a clear, objective viewpoint and they are more likely to see the potential in your business and advise or coach you towards a solution that works for you and your business.

The great thing about today’s world in this day and age is that you do not have to take on employees every time you need a little extra help. To start with, you can outsource some of the jobs you need help with and only have people in your business when you need it.

There are a lot of freelancers out there to fulfill your every whim and on your terms. It works for them to have their freedom and it works for you to get the jobs done.

You also have the option of starting with a few hours and building it up as the business grows.

If you are a parent that works from home, outsourcing may well mean the childcare and house cleaning. Trying to do everything is a recipe for disaster, and it really does hold your business back.

There are so many options out there and all you need to do is get clear on the outcome you are trying to create and then BEGIN!  You are a business owner now so it is time to start thinking like one.

Thank you, Rosemary, for your insights. I have found much success in delegating business functions outside of my core area of expertise to experienced professionals. By outsourcing my marketing, document control, and business management functions, I have freed up more of my own time and energy which I can redirect to my clients whom I believe are better served when I am laser focused on servicing them without added distractions. You are correct that deciding when to hire versus not to hire is not easy — a classic chicken or egg choice — and it might take a few efforts to get it right, but the investment will undoubtedly pay off.

Yes Kelley, Business owners find it hard to make that leap. Thankfully, in this day and age, there are quite a few options open to people to get stuck into delegating so, as you say, they do what they are good at and leave the rest to others who probably can do it better AND quicker!

    Thanks for stopping by!
