Women and Remote Working

November 22, 2011 By Hilary Brooks

There is currently a shift in the global work place with the rise in remote workers around the world. Due to the use of the internet, you can hire employees from across the world and have them work while you are sleeping. With this change and the rising number of women choosing to work remotely from home offices or other places, there are many things to consider.

When your home is your office how do you get a balance? You separate your work from your home.

–          have a room dedicated to working

–          remove potential distractions

–          this changes your state of mind in to “work” mode

Make appointments with others. Despite the fact that you are working from home, you should make appointments for important calls or discussions so that you and your coworkers will be prepared and focused during the allotted time.  During the calls remember to stay on point and limit multi tasking to ensure efficiency.

Stay online – People seeing you visible will attribute that with work. Make sure to respond quickly to emails and phone calls as well  so that people think you are productive outside of the office environment.

Take breaks – A lot of people get so absorbed in work and due to the casual nature of working from home they forget to take breaks. Make sure to take time to get up and move around during the day to keep your body and mind fresh.

Develop a plan – This needs to have clear expectations and includes appropriate uses of company property and expenses. Make sure to address concerns people may have as well as clear communication channels and methods.

From the recent survey compiled by Microsoft, of the 85 female board members polled, 81% agree that remote working improves their job satisfaction and 73% of them believe technology allows them to be just as productive as they would be in the office.

There are many reasons to work remotely for job satisfaction, environmental concerns, finishing work you simply couldn’t get done during a regular business day, etc. However if you are considering working from home make sure to have a clear and concise plan before doing so and you will find the transition a breeze and may even see a boost in your productivity.
