Can’t We All Just Get Along?

July 18, 2012 By Ashley Nialetz

Support Each Other and Stand up for the Right to Choose

I recently found an article that made me start thinking about the various struggles women have in the working world, wherever that may be.

Anne-Marie Slaughter wrote Why Women Still Can’t Have It All , in the Atlantic mobile. The title drew me in immediately.  In short, Anne-Marie talks about her decision to leave a big government job to be at home more, she still teaches and does other things  that allows her to be home with her family more and allows her to control her own time.  Along with that, she discusses the criticism she received when she made that decision and even still when she tells people about it.

As women and with the feminist movement and all the other pressures of the world we often feel like we have to do it all  have it all and look fabulous while doing it!   Often times this involves crawling, biting, scratching and breaking our way through glass ceilings, all while someone else decides our schedules and work loads. Then to be ridiculing other women for their choices is just nonsense.

Women should not feel like they HAVE to have a big corporate job, to fit into a mold to please anyone other then themselves.  They have the choice to freely decide if that’s what they want to do, and what they feel is best for their situation. Making the decision to be home with your family is just as much of a power position, there is nothing wrong with either choice.  Every woman is different, every family is different and we are fighting for equal treatment and the right to choose if we want to go to work, run a business, be a mom, housewife, super hero or anything else we please and the last people that should be ridiculing anyone is other women.

So it appears that women can’t have it all, at least not without hitting road blocks, rude comments and dirty looks, but we can certainly have all we want and need and do what works for us.  Everyone else can just mind their own business.

So, the moral of the story…support each other , be powerful and fabulous!
