6 Traits Of A Successful Salesperson

Have you ever met someone that you thought was born to be a salesperson? You might longingly look at that person wishing you had that gift.

It might look like being a born sales person is what it takes, but becoming a really good salesperson is a skill that anyone can achieve. You just need to be motivated and have the right direction.

Many times we think of sales in a negative way. Perhaps we’ve had someone who has been really “pushy” in selling their product or services. The real secret to being a good salesperson is to first, enjoy what you are doing and view it as “sharing.”

When you share what you have to offer you are doing so because you believe and value what you have. That means that you can’t “sell” just anything. You need to be interested in and be enthusiastic about it.

You might be thinking, “How can I be enthusiastic about being a pharmaceutical rep?” Think about the people that can be helped with the various products you have. For example, if you have a drug that will help eliminate the pain of fibromyalgia, you have a solution to someone’s problem. They need to know about what you have to offer. When you think this way you can’t wait to share what you have.

6 Traits that Successful Salespeople Exhibit

1. Confidence
They truly feel that they have the product or service that people need.

2. Listening
Great salepeople listen to what the person they are talking to is saying. By doing so, you can find out what the person wants and needs.

3. Questions
The truly skilled salesperson will ask the right questions. You can start by asking, “What would it be like to not having to worry about XYZ? How would that make you feel?” Really find out by the proper use of questions what’s on their mind.

4. Motivation
You need to have the proper motivation. In my experience, I’ve seen salespeople who you could tell were motivated by money. They just kept pushing. When you asked questions, they ignored you. They were interested in making a sale. When your motivation comes from wanting to help people solve a problem, it’s a total game-changer.

5. Goals
You need to set realistic goals when it comes to being a salesperson. One goal might be getting your foot in the door of a particular business. You might have the goal of being more productive.

6. Positivity
Think positively about getting the job done. Start listing the benefits of the products or services you have to offer. Think about the positive effects they could have on the people you come in contact with. How would that lives change?

When you take the time to develop these skills you will have a much better chance of success when it comes to being a sales person.

As with anything in your life your personality has a lot to do with how you shine through. It’s your enthusiasm for the products and services that will draw people to you.

To clarify, being enthusiastic does not mean you approach someone by being loud and pushing your product “in their face.” I’ve had that happen to me many times at networking events. Truth be told, I might have been interested in their product if they weren’t so pushy. I couldn’t help but keep thinking, “If I buy this, they’ll never leave me alone!” You don’t want to alienate your potential clients.

How do you approach people? Do so in a discreet manner. Learn to read people. A skilled sales person knows how to approach someone and strike up a conversation by asking the right questions. Remember, that was #6 in the above list. Asking questions will give you valuable answers.

Have you ever wondered why some people close a sale more than others? They’ve applied the six traits, such as listening, so they can offer a solution. Once they offer that solution, the person is more likely to sign that contract or buy that product or service.

Develop the six traits that successful people have, and in no time, people will be thinking you were a “born salesperson.”
