“Mighty Fingers Facing Change” works to raise $145,000 for a great cause!

October 10, 2012 By Gayla Baer

PRESS RELEASE:  Mighty Fingers Facing Change is a global collaborative art project that will help build stronger communities all over the world. The project, which is working towards an November, 2012 launch and a September 2013 end, will travel to a minimum of 14 locations on six continents. In each location, Kelly Sullivan and her team will execute a two-part program with a large group of girls, showing the girls how to use their fingers to paint! First, they will celebrate individuality as the girls create their own self-portraits. Second, they will encourage collaboration as they all work together with the girls to design and paint a portion of the 16’ x 5’ Mighty Fingers global community FingerSmear mural. The girls will use their “mighty fingers” to add their indelible mark to the mural and sign their name to it, and when the Mighty Fingers project is complete, the mural will be the first-ever globally-created canvas made by the hands of girls all over the world. The mural will tell a global story of community and the world working together as one to create something beautiful.

Mighty Fingers Facing Change has partnered with non-profit organizations all over the globe that work to support young women. These organizations include (but are not limited to): The Boys and Girls Clubs of San Francisco (San Francisco, CA), Girls Actively Participating! (GAP!) (Jackson, WY), GENaustin (Austin, TX), Rutgers Future Scholars (New Brunswick, NJ), YWCA Edmonton (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada), The Bright Lights Community Learning Initiative (The Philippines), and the Society for Transformation of Women and Children (Nigeria).

Kelly Sullivan has been creating these collaborative FingerSmears for nearly 20 years. She has had over 80,000 people stick their fingers in paint at her request, and she is thrilled to launch this long-held dream of hers to give back to adolescent girls and to create a global art masterpiece that illustrates the passion and power of the future’s biggest change-makers: young women. The entire project and the global FingerSmear mural will bring a unifying spotlight to non-profits that support women and girls, to communities locally and globally, and to girls and women all over the world.

Adolescent girls are the largest underserved and at-risk population worldwide. By enabling girls to express themselves through the creativity, collaboration and honesty of art, Mighty Fingers Facing Change will show girls everywhere that they have the power to dream big and succeed, to create stronger communities, and to build a better future.

“…We share a focus on girls, and know that art is a great approach to promote what many of them need: an outlet for expressing emotions that build rather than breaks down relationships. FingerSmears also offers a wonderful opportunity for dialogue across ages and cultures.”
– Dr. Cheryl Dellasega, Board Member, Mighty Fingers Facing Change

“Thank you [Mighty Fingers-Facing Change] for helping them learn about themselves and about each other and about the impact they can have on our world, as well as lifting their spirits and their sights. You always have a home at Rutgers.”
– Aramis Gutierrez, Director, Rutgers Future Scholars
