5 Steps Women Can Take to Get on Corporate Boards

February 4, 2013 By Susan Gunelius

NEWS AND INSIGHTS UPDATE:

Last week, I asked how we can increase the number of women on corporate boards and shared suggestions from women in executive-level positions gathered by AS/COA. In fact, you can find many statistics and facts about women on boards here on Women on Business. The data is quite clear. A diverse board that includes women typically improves performance in many areas, yet there is still a huge gender gap in the boardroom.

Now, it’s time to take the answer to the question of how we can increase the number of women on corporate boards a step further with five steps women can take to make it happen. These suggestions come from Henna Inam, CEO Coach, who works with female leaders to help them be successful and manage companies to top performance.

You can follow the link at the end of the post to read all of Henna’s suggestions and insights. She makes some great points and even echos some of the suggestions offered by the female executives who shared their thoughts with AS/COA. Here are some of Henna’s five steps women can take to get a corporate board seat:

“Get some Non-Profit Board experience – According to Carol Tomei, CFO of the Home Depot, who sits on the Boards of UPS  and the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, non-profit boards are an excellent way to start getting Board experience.  Make sure that these boards are not rubber-stamp boards but have tough issues to address, where you will learn board governance.”

Henna suggests that even getting a seat on the board of a smaller company or startup can be helpful in landing a seat on a larger company’s board later in your career.

“Get educated/trained on Governance issues. Some of the major universities have Directors’ colleges. The NACD has chapters and programs across the US some of which are open to non-Directors. The WCD also has programs available.”

Follow the link below to read all of Henna’s suggestions. If you’re interested in being on a corporate board, her article is a must read.
