Helen Gurley Brown – Left Us Life and Career Lessons

August 15, 2012 By Ashley Nialetz

Helen Gurley Brown Passes Away at 90

Helen Gurley Brown, passed away this week.  She was an author for a well known book for shocking the public of the early 60’s “Sex and the Single Girl”  and Editor at Cosmopolitan magazine for many years.

Her role in the fight for women’s liberation was debated for years.  She called herself a feminist , she showed women of so many ages that it was ok to be single, and it was ok to focus on a career instead of marriage.   She showed women that it was fine and in fact normal to talk about your sexuality and to have a sex life even as a single woman.  She wrote books, became the editor of a magazine of which she revolutionized for the time and had a successful marriage, she literally did have it all and did so with style.

Helen figured out how to have that balanced and did a damn good job, she had many great lessons for women, and brought the topic of being a strong independent woman right to the forefront and threw it into people’s faces…where it should be.   I think I will be taking some notes from her, how about you?

Towards the end of her career she was criticized for the topics of some articles and some said she wasn’t in touch with her audience anymore.  However, this is a woman who came from very little and turned herself into a successful career woman that the world will be talking about and recognizing even now, after she gone.

Here is an article from the Times about Helen Gurley Brown, her life and career.   Enjoy!
