CEO Skill Set: Getting Board Buy-In

November 8, 2014 By Tracy Houston

board meeting writing executives directorsBoard alignment with the CEO is a critical component of a high-performing board of directors.

Opinions vary on the definition of what constitutes a high-performing board, but the topic of building and leveraging a board comes up in my consulting practice regularly. The CEO skill set needs to include the ability to get board buy-in.

Here are a few highlights:

Trust

The most important job of the CEO is gaining the trust of the board – spending time with each director inside and outside the board meeting to get a complete understanding of their thoughts on the company strategy or issues of concern.

Collective Responsibility

Being mindful that all the board is on the same page as the CEO and working towards a collegial environment.

Consistent Communication

Creating clear and consistent communication with the board that ensures no surprises in the boardroom.

What are the Critical Elements for High Performance?

When considering the relationship of the board and CEO, what have you found to be the critical elements for high performance?
