Living Without the “K” On Your “_eyboard”

December 15, 2010 By Laura Nozicka

In the last few days, the letter I mentioned above is no longer functioning on my computer. And it’s so annoying and frustrating!! It’s amazing how we don’t give a second thought to the things we use on a daily basis. Yet, when they are no longer available we find ourselves in a tizzy!

If I need to use that letter in a word, which does become an issue when I need to spell my last name or express gratitude in a document or email, I have to come up with different ways to get to it. One of my solutions includes cutting and pasting it from an old email or document, which means adding time on to completing an email, project, etc. Ctrl V has now become the magic command for pasting my MIA character. Another way I’ve managed to deal with the loss of this letter is to type a word and then select the command for an automatic spell review. I can then choose the correct word from a list of possible word options, but I have to hope it’s on the list. Otherwise, I have to revert to Ctrl V.

My other option is to use the small lightweight laptop I use for travel. But because it’s for convenience, it’s really not ideal for lengthy projects, marathon typing, and other assignments. Plus, I really don’t find having two laptops running at the same time overly practical. Yet, I suppose I could also just bring my laptop in for repair and be without it for a while. Or I could just buy a new one.

In the interim, however, I’ve learned to live without that letter when possible. If you’ve noticed, other than in the blog title, there is no use of that character anywhere in my post. I had to get creative and find alternative ways to get my assignments and correspondence completed. With this character unavailable for use in more preferred words, I have been forced to find synonyms or to describe words instead.

Did you ever notice that when you have to do without something your brain jumps into creativity mode to find an alternative solution to a problem? Can you remember a time when you found a creative alternative solution to a problem when your first choice wasn’t available? How proud were you when you did so? How do you spur your own creativity to solve problems?

Please share some of your stories of creative problem solving. Would love to hear about it!
