To Ensure Business Growth Keep Asking Yourself This Question

December 16, 2014 By Rosemary Nonny Knight

business woman presentation graphIt is so easy to get stuck in your business and forget about taking a break from it every now and then.

A lot of the clients I work with have forgotten what it means to go away on holiday, vacation, whatever you call it. In fact, they have not taken a day off in ages! And we got into business for freedom, didn’t we?

Anyway, that would be the topic of another post.

The thing about being stuck in your business all the time is that you stop seeing anything except what is right in front of you. All you see are the issues, the concerns, all the things that are not working yet, all the things that are working, and so you get content and complacent.

See What the Customer Sees

How then can you see what the customer sees? How then will you know when it is time to try something different?

Human beings get stuck doing the same thing over and over, and because they are getting a bit of a positive result from it, they assume then that they can stay doing the same thing forever. As the saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” It gets comfortable and change becomes something you really do not want to do.

And yet, in business as well as in other areas, that attitude is exactly the kind of attitude that will kill off your business given enough time. You may be profitable now, but if you keep doing the same thing over and over again, a competitor with new ideas is going to come and take your customers away from under your nose.

So what is the question you need to ask to ensure your business keeps growing?

What is the Best Way to do This?

Whatever business you are in, you need to continually be innovating and continually be presenting your business in a new light. It is just like a marriage that goes stale. Your customers get bored with the way you do things. Of course, there will be the loyal ones, but if you are not up-leveling regularly, even your most loyal people will be tempted to try something or someone else.

This happens all the time in small local businesses, and instead of rising to the challenge, the small business owners start lobbying against the big boys. That battle is lost already.

You need a few new ideas so keep asking the question of yourself and of your staff, if you have any, to ensure you achieve business growth: What is the best way to do this?

You may need an external eye to give you some new ideas, or you just may need to do some reading, get some training, or go see what people in other industries are doing. Just don’t rest on your past successes. Move on, move forward, keep on fighting for the life you want.
