What Happens When Your Nerves Get the Best of You?

February 20, 2015 By Toni Nelson

business woman speech speaking microphone audienceYou’ve just been given the opportunity of a lifetime. You will be speaking to hundreds of your ideal clients at a seminar. These are the very people you are meant to help. At first you can’t contain your excitement. Then it happens, the nerves set in.

Whether this happens before your speech or when you accept the speaking engagement, learning some relaxation techniques will come in handy.

First take a look at the infographic at the end of this article, and you will see that you are not alone if the thought of speaking to a live audience has you nervous beyond belief.

How Can You Deal with Those Nerves?

As soon as you get nervous your body reacts and starts to tighten up your shoulder muscles. One technique that can help is to breathe deeply. If you don’t do this the next thing you know you have a massive headache. Learning to breath deeply calms you even if you are not going to be speaking in front of a live audience.

Another fear factor is lack of confidence. Confidence comes from being prepared. That means you should take the time to prepare and practice your speech as much as possible. You don’t have to know your speech word for word but you need to feel comfortable enough that the words will flow smoothly and naturally. Remember that you are giving a speech on a topic you are well versed in. After all, it’s your area of expertise or you wouldn’t have been sought out for this opportunity.

Fear is just a four-letter word that you need to gain mastery over. You are in control. When you realize this, the knowledge will spill forth.
