15 Words to Delete from Your LinkedIn Profile

December 7, 2012 By Susan Gunelius

NEWS AND INSIGHTS UPDATE:

LinkedIn has analyzed its 187 million members’ profiles and compiled a list of buzzwords that are so overused they can actually do more harm than good. If you want recruiters to contact you, potential clients to connect with you, or peers to reach out to you, then you need to add more substance and less buzz to your LinkedIn profile.

Julie Bort of Business Insider shared the list of 15 words that you need to delete from your LinkedIn profile right away in order to make it more powerful and effective. For example, the list includes descriptive words like:

  • Organizational
  • Analytical
  • Creative
  • Motivated
  • Innovative

Do you agree that these words are overused in LinkedIn profiles, resumes, and so on?

In The Complete Idiot’s Guide to LinkedIn, I explain that you should always lead with your strengths in your profile and make sure it is highly focused on your primary goal. Why are you using LinkedIn? What do you want to get from your time and efforts? Your LinkedIn profile should communicate the information that helps you reach those goals. Write a captivating and keyword-rich headline to attract the right people to your profile, and then tell the story in a way that positions you in the right direction to reach your goals. Work towards achieving 100% profile completeness, and make your profile public to increase your exposure.

You can follow the link below to review the complete list of 15 words to delete from your LinkedIn profile.

I’m pretty sure I’m guilty of using some of these words in my profile. They are standard words you think everyone wants to hear, and I completely agree they are over used.
