2013 State of Women-Owned Businesses Data Released [Infographic]

February 11, 2013 By Susan Gunelius

Optimism prevails among women business owners in 2013 according to the data from the 2013 State of Women-Owned Businesses report from Web.com and the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO).

The data comes from a survey of 552 women business owners conducted between December 14, 2012 and January 4, 2013. Of the survey respondents, 85% predicted that more women will become entrepreneurs in 2013 than in previous years. This echoes statistics from other research about female entrepreneurs (see the female entrepreneurs infographic for details).

Another positive statistic that bodes well for the overall economy reveals that 38% of women business owners plan to invest more in hiring during 2013 than they did in 2012. Furthermore, 54% expect to keep hiring at the same level in 2013.

Despite the feeling of optimism, there are many challenges in front of women business owners. For example, two out of five women business owners report that finding new customers is their biggest challenge in 2013.

The infographic below includes many of the findings from the study. To read all of the details, follow the link to the complete 2013 State of Women-Owned Businesses report.

I wouldn’t call this an infographic – it’s a lot of data attached to little pictures. Useful – but the point of an infographic is to tie it all together in a unified theme.

The most useful information seems to be in the text. Most women predict that more women will become entrepreneurs. So….in what industries? How are they faring?

What should a woman be looking for if she wanted to join the ranks of entrepreneurs?

Don’t see that in the text or the pictures…..

    Hi Alan,

I guess you’d have to take that feedback to NAWBO and Web.com so they can improve their infographic design next time. You can follow the link at the end of the text in the post to see the full report with all of the data if you’re interested in seeing more of their research results.

It’s a conceptual issue rather than a design issue. It looks good – but I’d like the “big picture” to advise my daughter on the possibilities of becoming an entrepreneur. What I get is that more women are becoming entrepreneurs. Hope the economy improves and we’ll do more social media marketing.

An infographic has to make a point. A design only has to look good.

If anyone has a better visualization of the state of women entrepreneurs we’d like to share that too.

    Alan,
We just share the data, we don’t have the staff or resources to do the research or analysis. However, if you scroll through the Infographics category on our site, there is a lot of information related to entrepreneurs and women business owners (here is the link: http://www.womenonbusiness.com/female-entrepreneurs-are-making-business-boom-infographic/). Catalyst.org also does a lot of research in this area and would be a good primary resource for you and your daughter. Perhaps if you contacted Web.com and NAWBO with your concerns, they might consider creating a follow-up infographic that offers the conceptual big picture that you’re looking for. Here are their websites: http://www.web.com and http://www.nawbo.org. I hope that helps.

Doesn’t the title if the infographic make it clear that it’s simply reporting statistics about the “state of women owned businesses”? An infographic is a data visualization tool. I think this one does an adequate job of communicating data about the current state of women-owned businesses in a visual manner. Every person isn’t going to like every infographic, but there is nothing fundamentally wrong with this one.

Susan, thank you for sharing this information! My organization works with several small business owners who are women and this will be good to pass on to them. I think the infographic has some great information!
