Does Your Job Match Your Personality Type? [Infographic]

January 25, 2016 By Susan Gunelius

Personality Type Jobs

What personality type are you? If you’re not sure, you can take the online assessment at 16Personalities.com. It only takes about 10 minutes to take the assessment and you’ll instantly learn which of the 16 personality types you are based on the Myers-Briggs personality assessment (the MBTI).

Keep in mind, the complete Myers-Briggs test is quite complex, and the online version offered by 16Personalities.com is quite simple, so your result might not be perfect. However, it’s a great place to start (it’s free).

The Myers-Briggs test is one of the most commonly used personality assessments, particularly among large corporations trying to train their employees to work more effectively together. When you take the test, you’re assigned a 4-letter combination for your personality (e.g., INFP, ENFJ, etc.) based on:

  • Mind – determines how you interact with your environment (you’re either extroverted or introverted)
  • Energy – shows how you direct your mental energy (you’re either intuitive or observant)
  • Nature – determines how you make decisions and cope with emotions (you’re either thinking or feeling)
  • Tactics – reflects your approach to work, planning, and decision-making (you’re either judging or prospecting)
  • Identity – shows how confident you are in your abilities and decisions (you’re either assertive or turbulent)

According to research by Truity Psychometrics, your personality type affects your career, your chances of getting a leadership position and managing other people, and even your salary. For example, ESTJs have the highest salaries while ENTJs manage the most people. When it comes to job satisfaction, ESFJs are the most satisfied with their jobs. And the most likely personality type to be self-employed is ENTP.

Personality experts believe that your personality type needs to match your job or you’ll never be truly happy at work. College Match Up put together the infographic below that shows which jobs are best for each of the Myers-Briggs personality types:

  1. ISTJ – Business administrator, police officer, lawyer
  2. ESTJ – Sales representative, military officer, teacher
  3. ISFJ – Interior decorator, social worker, childcare
  4. ESFJ – Nurse, counselor, teacher
  5. ISTP – Computer programmer, engineer, forensic pathologist
  6. ESTP – Marketing, paramedic, athlete
  7. ESFP – Artist, fashion designer, consultant
  8. ISFP – Musician, photographer, veterinarian
  9. ENTJ – Corporate executive, entrepreneur, judge
  10. INTP – Scientist, engineer, corporate strategist
  11. ENTP – Psychologist, actor, systems analyst
  12. INTP – University professor, mathematician, forensic research
  13. ENFJ – Clergy, events coordinator, writer
  14. INFJ – Chiropractor, early childhood development, dentist
  15. ENFP – Politician, television reporter, writer
  16. INFP – Psychiatrist, social worker, teacher

The Best Jobs for your Personality Type

What personality type are you? Does your job match your personality? Mine doesn’t according to this test, but I’ve managed to be quite successful and happy. I guess it just goes to show that personality tests are fun and can certainly help you better understand yourself and others, but they don’t define your choices or your happiness. Don’t let your results of a personality assessment limit your success!
