Survey Shows What Employees Really Want for Administrative Professionals Day

April 10, 2009 By Susan Gunelius

Ready for some big news?  Next week, Women On Business will hold a giveaway where 5 lucky winners will each receive a $100 American Express gift card to celebrate Administrative Professionals Day!  Stay tuned for all the details coming in just a couple of days!  In the meantime, American Express shared some results from a recent survey the company conducted related to Administrative Professionals Day that I’d like to share.

Hoping to take the mystery out of how professionals like to be rewarded on Administrative Professionals Day, April 22, American Express sought answers from members of the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) about their experiences and opinions surrounding anoft-overlooked holiday.

April survey highlights included:

  1. The preferred reward can cost less than the alternatives — 79 percent of administrative professionals would rather receive a monetary
reward of $25 to spend any way they want when given the choice between that, a $40 floral arrangement (20 percent) or $30 in chocolates (1 percent).
  2.  Go with a gift card that stands out – 88 percent of those surveyed said they would rather receive $50 in the form of a gift card to spend
to their liking, versus an extra $50 in their paycheck (12 percent).
  3.  Don’t forget this year! – Of those surveyed, 72 percent said that their office or someone they’ve worked with has neglected to observe
Administrative Professionals Day in the past and in fact, 50 percent of survey respondents have not received a gift on Administrative
Professionals Day three or more times.
  4. Prevent re-gifting – Nearly half of our survey respondents  (48 percent) admitted that they are less likely to re-gift a $25 gift card
than they would a basket of candy (16 percent), household plant (9 percent) or a coffee mug (27 percent).

Among those surveyed, feeling valued is important but if they are to be rewarded in the form of a gift, it’s important that they can put it to
use.  According to one administrative professional, “Much as I love flowers, they usually die within a week.  A gift card allows me to
choose something that will last longer or to indulge in something I wouldn’t normally purchase for myself.”

With Administrative Professionals Day right around the corner, it’s important to find the right gift to say “thank you” to the people that
help make your business hum.    You can visit www.americanexpress.com/gift (Note: that’s not an affiliate link) to order a Gift Card for Administrative Professionals Day on April 22.
